Barcelona begins talks to extend Flick’s contract

In a significant development, BILD (via SPORT) reports that FC Barcelona have made the first moves to extend coach Hansi Flick’s contract.

According to the report, the La Liga champions have offered the German coach a contract extension for at least another season, which would tie him to the club until June 2028.

The aim of Barcelona’s sporting department is to protect and stabilise the project, in which all parties feel comfortable, with Flick at the helm.

Barca’s board of directors and sporting director Deco do not want Flick to start next season with only one year left on his contract, so negotiations have already begun to ensure his continuity.

The plan is for the contract to be extended for just one year, as the German coach is not a fan of long-term deals.

Flick is considered one of Joan Laporta’s greatest sporting successes. The Barcelona president took a risk by choosing the German, who has revived the team despite minimal investment in the transfer market in recent years.

He has improved results compared to Xavi Hernández, won important trophies and has returned Barcelona to the European stage, while also giving space to young players.

Despite some internal tensions, Flick is happy at Barcelona and hopes that next summer the club will take another step forward with the arrival of a truly decisive reinforcement.

Meanwhile, Deco prefers to work on time and avoid situations where key figures operate with only one year left on their contracts. He has already secured the majority of the squad and Flick could be next.

According to reports, the recent meeting in Barcelona between Laporta and Pini Zahavi, Flick’s agent, was aimed at paving the way for this new contract.

The club’s aim is to secure the renewal of the German coach before the presidential elections, as he is seen as a consensual figure, above any individual candidacy.

The 60-year-old coach renewed his contract last May for just one season, and a similar short-term extension could be agreed early next year.

The German has always made it clear that he is not a fan of long-term contracts and has even hinted that Barcelona could be his last job as a coach.

Although he has looked tired at times this season, he still feels strong enough to carry on and enjoys the full support of both the dressing room and the board.

At Barcelona, ??there is no doubt that Flick is set to remain in the medium term. It now remains to be seen whether he will accept what could be his final extension with the club, extending his stay until 2028.
