Real Madrid hold ’emergency meeting’ to discuss Xabi Alonso’s future

Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso is facing increasing pressure at the Santiago Bernabeu after another poor result at Girona left the team with just one win in their last five matches.

The Basque coach has been questioned over both his tactical approach and his relationship with the dressing room.

The latter was the main problem cited for the lack of cohesion, with the focus being on the weak link between Alonso and his stars, but after last week’s win over Olympiacos, several players seemed committed to making things work.

However, a disappointing draw at Montilivi has reignited doubts.

According to Indykaila, Real Madrid will discuss Alonso’s future this week.

The club have called an emergency meeting on Thursday to discuss the squad’s problems, especially after the trip to San Mames to Athletic Club.

One of the main reasons for the meeting is that 4-5 senior players have expressed dissatisfaction with Alonso’s tactical strategy, feeling that it is not getting the best out of the players.

The report adds that some of the players who have expressed their frustrations are eager for Zinedine Zidane to take charge of Real Madrid for a third time.

Zidane is expected to take charge of France after the 2026 World Cup, having expressed his desire to return to management.

While Zidane resigned from Real Madrid in 2021, he previously came to save the team during the season.

However, Diario AS reports that Real Madrid retain faith in the former Bayer Leverkusen coach.

However, the result against Girona was a surprise, with the club’s directors and president Florentino Perez believing that the improvement in relations last week would significantly help resolve the problems.

From above, there is a desire to remain calm, but also a need for “an immediate reaction.”

Without a doubt, Alonso cannot afford any more negative results in the near future.

His team has not impressed at any point this season, and without points to give them time to improve their game, the noise will only increase. However, it seems that something in Alonso’s approach has changed over the past week.
