Liverpool confirm Isak’s serious injury, Swede will be out for several months
Alexander Isak faces several months out after fracturing his left foot, Liverpool have confirmed.
The striker, who moved to Merseyside from Newcastle in a record deal for British football, suffered the injury during the opening goal in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Tottenham on Saturday.
Micky van de Ven made a hard tackle to block the Swede’s shot but was unable to stop the goal.
However, Isak did not stand up to celebrate his second goal in 16 appearances and was replaced by Jeremie Frimpong after medical treatment.
Manager Arne Slott immediately gave a negative signal, while Liverpool confirmed that scans carried out on Monday revealed a fracture in Isak’s lower left foot.
In an official statement, the club said:
“Alexander Isak has today successfully undergone surgery on the injury he sustained on Saturday. The Liverpool forward was injured during a tackle while scoring the opening goal against Tottenham Hotspur and was forced to be substituted. Following the diagnosis, surgery was performed today on an ankle injury that included a fractured fibula. Isak’s rehabilitation will now continue at the AXA Training Centre, with no timetable for his return.”
Speaking after the Tottenham match, Sloti said he had an immediate feeling that the injury was serious:
“If a player doesn’t even try to get back on the pitch, it’s usually not a good sign, but I can’t say more than that,” the Dutchman said.
“It’s just a feeling and not something medical… let’s not be too negative yet. We don’t know yet. We hope he’ll be back as soon as possible,” he said.
This latest injury further compounds a difficult debut season for Isak at Anfield.
He started slowly after missing the summer pre-season and was not fully fit when he joined the team.
He then suffered a groin injury that kept him out for several weeks.
So far, Isak has scored just three goals in 16 appearances for Liverpool, a statistic that is unlikely to improve any time soon after this painful return.
