Milan drops points in Serie A, draws with Atalanta
Milan failed to win again, as Atalanta drew for the fifth time in a row in Serie A, with Ademola Lookman’s goal cancelling out Samuele Ricci’s early lead.
Atalanta were the only team still unbeaten in the league, but with only two wins and four draws in a row. Giorgio Scalvini and Mitchel Bakker were absent, while Ademola Lookman and Charles De Ketelaere were activated in attack, supported by Mario Pašali?.
In the red and black camp, Milan were coming off the back of a 2-2 draw with Pisa. Ruben Loftus-Cheek returned to the bench, while Christian Pulisic, Adrien Rabiot, Pervis Estupiñán and Ardon Jashari were injured.
Milan took the lead early: after a corner, Honest Ahanor cleared the ball to the 16-yard line where Samuele Ricci fired a half-volley; the ball was deflected by Ederson and completely fooled goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi.
Atalanta fought back but lost captain Marten de Roon to a muscle problem — he was replaced by former Milan player Marco Brescianini.
The equalizer came courtesy of Lookman’s first goal since the summer “rebellion.” He received a brilliant pass from Pašali?, controlled it and fired a powerful left-footed shot into the box, leaving the goalkeeper no chance.
Alexis Saelemaekers missed a golden opportunity when, instead of taking the shot himself, he tried to pass to Nkunku and the play went away.
In the end, Davide Zappacosta came close to scoring with a spectacular shot from distance, but Maignan reacted brilliantly, deflecting the ball over the crossbar with his fingertips.
In the final minutes, Matteo Gabbia blocked an attempt by former teammate Yunus Musah, preserving the score at 1-1.
With this point, Milan moves to the 18th point quota in the table, occupying the third position in the table.
Meanwhile, Atalanta is seventh with 13 points collected.
